AI for lawyers - 5 Things to know about

One of the past features on LawBARD was around AI and how it could assist your firm marketing. In that feature, we talked about AI tools today, are based on Machine Learning, and using Training Data to teach the system to recognize patterns and make accurate predictions or classifications. Then the AI engine is “trained” using either supervised or unsupervised training.

As amazing as some of these tools are, there are many, many limitations to what AI can and cannot do. Below are five things that AI cannot do today.

Number one is Common Sense Reasoning: AI often lacks the innate human ability to understand context, make nuanced decisions based on common sense, and grasp implicit knowledge.

Number two is Creativity and Originality: While AI can generate content based on existing patterns and data, it does not have the capability for true creativity and the ability to produce entirely novel ideas, artworks, or invention.

At three, we have Emotional Intelligence: AI cannot understand and appropriately respond to human emotions. AI does not have empathy and or understand emotional nuance, Machines don't feel emotions.

Number four is Ethical Decision-Making: AI systems lack a moral compass and ethical judgment in complex situations. They operate based on programmed rules and patterns without the ability to navigate the ethical complexities of human decision-making.

Lastly, at number five, physical dexterity, and mobility: While AI can control machinery and robots, it lacks the physical dexterity and adaptability of humans. Tasks that require fine motor skills, complex movements, or navigating unpredictable physical environments are challenging for current AI systems.

AI will continue to evolve but AI is not self-aware and it may be a very long time for AI to truly replace humans in tasks that require human-level thinking. However, in its current Narrow AI form, AI represents an opportunity to help both companies including law firms in tasks involving data analysis, process automation, content creation, and customer service.
