AI Is Disruptive and Transforming – and has the potential to drastically improve your marketing efforts.

AI has already had a significant impact on the legal profession, and it is likely to continue to do so in the future.

What is AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. AI systems use algorithms and models to analyze data, make decisions, and solve problems. Most AI systems use Machine Learning, and Training Data to teach the system to recognize patterns and make accurate predictions or classifications. Then the AI engine is “trained” using either supervised or unsupervised training. This type of AI has been around since the 1950s.

All the AI tools that have come out recently, including ChatGPT, Jasper, and GrammerlyGO are similar to those early Machine Learning tools in that they are algorithm and model driven and need to be trained on large data sets. Currently all AI is classified as Narrow or Weak AI.

The second category of AI is General or Strong AI. General AI refers to a theoretical future state where machines can perform any intellectual task that a human being can. This level of AI is not yet achieved, and the development of truly autonomous, self-aware systems remains a significant challenge. So, it may be a very long time for AI to truly replace humans in tasks that require human level thinking. However, in its current Narrow AI form, AI represents an opportunity to help both individuals and companies in tasks involving data analysis, process automation, content creation and customer service.

Today. AI cannot perform tasks that require understanding abstract thoughts or unstructured data, usage of creativity or empathy, understanding of context or tasks that require a lot of experience or intuition.

With the above said, there are AI tools that are excellent at helping with various law firm marketing activities:

Research and Data Mining: Utilize AI to extract insights from large datasets, identify trends and patterns, and gain a deeper understanding of your target audience.

Pros & Cons of AI Tool Usage

Pros

AI tools have become increasingly popular for content creation and offer numerous advantages. Firstly, they are affordable and cost-effective, making them accessible for law firms of all sizes. They are also highly efficient and scalable, allowing users to generate high-quality content quickly and easily. Additionally, AI tools save time by automating tasks such as editing and formatting. They can also improve search engine optimization (SEO) by analyzing data and providing insights into how to optimize content for search engines. Furthermore, AI tools provide content for websites, blogs, social media, and other platforms, making it easy to generate and distribute content across multiple channels. Finally, AI tools can assist in decision-making by providing insights and data to help law firms make informed decisions about their content strategy.

Cons

When it comes to the current crop of AI tools, there is a wide range in how they apply AI, and the quality of their AI engines. Some of them are great and provide strong value, however, like small children, they often need to be watched carefully. For instant, some tools like ChatGPT use datasets that may not be up-to-date, have query limits, or fail to provide proper attribution to sources. As such, the output may not be correct or acceptable. While AI technology can help with tasks such as personalization and editing, it still needs human input for creativity and emotional intelligence. Additionally, tools may not account for important factors like context, tone, style, and intent. Quality concerns such as ethics, truth, and plagiarism can also arise. There are also worries about whether Google and the other search engines will devalue content generated by AI, as well as privacy and security concerns for the data being used. Finally, there are concerns about potential biases, discrimination, and manipulation by AI.

So, many of these tools are great and AI, in its current form, has the potential to drastically change how law firms and other entities perform marketing activities; however, we are early in the lifecycle of most of these types of AI-drive tools and expect to see several iterations of these tools over the coming couple of years. So be prepared to see some starts and stops, limit expectations when implementing these tools, and make sure that you do ensure oversight.

Attention I con

Bar Association Advertising & Ethics Rules

It is your responsibility to make sure your use of AI is compliant with your state’s Bar Association Advertising Rules and Regulations or the American Bar Association (ABA) Model Rules of Professional Conduct. This includes any vendors you hire to create your branding components.

Costs

Since it is still very early in the lifecycle of most of these tools, the cost of AI tools can vary widely depending on the specific tool, its functionality, and the provider offering it. In most cases, these tools are cloud-based and operate on some version of a freemium model, meaning basic services are free to use but lack some features and capabilities and those features and capabilities are available at an extra cost.

The cost of developing custom AI solutions can also vary depending on the complexity of the project, the skill level of the development team, and the amount of data required for training. Some companies may charge a fixed fee for a specific project, while others may offer ongoing support and maintenance for a monthly or yearly fee.

When choosing an AI tool, it is important to thoroughly research and compare different options before making a decision.
